I paint with acrylic and oil. I try hard to express emotions through my choice of colours.

I am interested in our human response to the world. My recent work has been inspired by the effects of climate change and the effects of war - particularly from a woman’s perspective.

Travelling to new places often triggers new work. I observe how people live, the architecture, the landscape, the colours and I also hope to respond to their history. In 2020, responding locally with Covid-19 and lockdown, my work reflected feelings of separation, connection and shelter.

I reflect on the subliminal ways we absorb what we see around us, and this feeds into my more abstract paintings. With these, I am always aiming to stir the emotions.

My process varies.  I work from photos I’ve taken, making small sketches first in gouache paint, pencil or collage. Sometimes, an idea comes into my head and I make little imaginative drawings in a sketchbook I carry around with me.  I try and re-use materials and make assemblages from found objects, forming links to previous lives and stories.  I prefer to paint on hard surfaces, as I find it more giving to layering of textures and multiple surfaces.

My Background

I formally trained and worked as a Graphic Designer for over 20 years. I then returned to study for an MA at Central St Martins. The course fed into my passions of sustainability and interest in materials during 2006-2008 and led me on a new creative journey.

Following the MA, I gained commissions: a 3-dimensional shade structure for a Gold medal-winning Chelsea Flower Show garden; a window display for Louis Vuitton; a collection of contemporary wallpapers inspired by ecclesiastical embroideries; a suspended paper sculpture of laser cut Ginkgo leaves. I made printed textiles, ceramics and cards, some sold in the Tate Modern shop.
